WATER SUPPLY FOR HAMILTON.

A meeting of ratepayers was held last night to consider the proposals of the Borough Council to secure a water supply for a specified area of the borough. The Mayor (Mr. R.W. Dyer) occupied the chair, and lucidly explained Mr. Metcalfe's proposal and how it is purposed to finance it. The estimated cost of the work is £4747. ilt is proposed to borrow £5000 from the Government at 3j> per cent., which will pay the amount off in 41 years, the secmity being a speoial rate of 9d m the £ on property within 1 the -wafer area. The Mayor stated that it is improbable that it would bo necessary to levy the whole rate, as property hud * largely increased in value since the estimate was- made. After the scheme was in operation the -revenue : would bo raised by a water rate. The annual working expenses' are estimated at £118. The proposal is to pump from the river by a gas engine into a reservoir on the; hill," which will give 'ample fall for domestic purposes, and a fair ; fire, service. , The : following resolution was carried' with ; only four ; dissentients:"That the Mayor bo requested-:to cause a poll of the electors to bo taken upon ■ the proposal y to borrow ' £5000 ; for a water supply for a portion of the borough o£ Hamilton.
