A meeting of ratepayers was held last night to consider the proposals of the Borough Council to secure a water supply for a specified area of the borough. The Mayor (Mr. R.W. Dyer) occupied the chair, and lucidly explained Mr. Metcalfe's proposal and how it is purposed to finance it. The estimated cost of the work is £4747. ilt is proposed to borrow £5000 from the Government at 3j> per cent., which will pay the amount off in 41 years, the secmity being a speoial rate of 9d m the £ on property within 1 the -wafer area. The Mayor stated that it is improbable that it would bo necessary to levy the whole rate, as property hud * largely increased in value since the estimate was- made.
