THE EIGHTH CONTINGENT.
■ [by telegraph.—press association.] Wang Wednesday. Captain Charlie Somnierville, son of Colonel Sommerville, who was lieutenant in the Second Contingent, and was wounded in the arm, has received a commission as captain in the Eighth Contingent, probably in the South Island division. [BY TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT.] • Wellington, Wednesday. About 200 or 250 Auckland members of the Eighth Contingent, attended the performance of "La Perichole," at the Opera House to-night, as guests of Mr. Witheford, M.H.R. Major-General Babington and his wife accepted invitations from Mr. Witheford to be present. The theatre was hung with bunting, and great enthusiasm, was shown. One of the Aucklanders present is a man who, when last in South Africa, carried despatches between General Babington and Lieutenant-Colonel Dairies.
