STATEMENT IN > THE FRENCH CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— iKeceived Jatniary 23, 12.24 a.m.) Paris, January 22, In the Chamber of Deputies M. Etienne said the New Hebrides demanded the serious attention of the Government. Australia was trying to supplant France, who owned 800,000 hectares of land in the group. If the Government was inactive the question would become a source i of worry. He suggested the abolition of the convict system in New Caledonia in return for Australia making concessions in the New Hebrides. ■ M. Delcasse, Minister for Foreign Affairs, ~ said France only asked for the maintenance of the treaties.
