Police returns show an increase of 72 cases of drunkenness in the East Coast police district during the past year, the figures being 563, as against 491. Wanganui, Tuesday. In the District Court to-day in the second trial of J. F. Buckingham, for alleged perjury, the jury disagreed and were discharged. The third trial will take place on the 7th of next month. Gishobne, Tuesday. The first district conference of the Farmers' Union was held this afternoon, Mr. Glass, the secretary, and a large number of delegates attended. Great interest is being manifested in the water drainage vote, which will be taken tomorrow. ■Wellington, Tuesday. An inquiry into complaints recently made regarding the Terrace Gaol, Wellington, will be made by Messrs. Haselden, S.M., and Poynton, Public Trustee. They are to receive appointment as commissioners on the return of the Governor from the southern islands. The body found in the liarborr last night has been. identified as that of James Robertson, an old age pensioner. It is supposed he got into the water accidentally.
