For 10 years ho was the head of the Imperial arsenal. As Admiral Ito he ' was the commander of the Japanese fleet in the Yalu River engagement of 159-1. and virtually drove the Chinese fleet from the seas. Then he was popularly known as the " thin admiral," from his physical characteristics. He was the idol of the sailors, and to-day is no less esteemed in society on account of his genial manners and versatile ability.
