THE HON. J. McGOWAN.
[FIIOJI OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Saturday. The Hon. J. McGowan, Minister for Mines, was occupied t'o-day in dealing with private deputations, and in attending to Departmental business. In the evening a deputation of volunteers waited upon him with respect to the inefficient state of the rifle range at Parawai, and a request was made that he would use his efforts to find funds for increasing its firing range to 1000 yds, to provide more modern targets than those at present in use, and also to construct a concrete protecting wall. The lion, gentleman replied that he would, on his return to Wellington, represent the matter fully to his colleague, the Minister for Defence. Mr. McGowan leaves Thames for Paeroa on Monday, and will visit in turn the districts of Karangahake, Waihi, and Te Aroha. He expects to return to Thames about the end of the week, and will then proceed overland to Coromandel.
