VOLUNTEERING NEWS.

AUCKLAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION. [bt telegraph.— correspondent.] Paeroa, Saturday. The various volunteers who have been taking part at Waihi in the annual firing competition held under the auspices of the Auckland Rifle Association met at the Central Hotel last night, when Captain Shepherd, assisted by Private N. Haszard, distributed the various cash prizes won at the meeting, the aggregate amount being £166 15s. i Captain Shepherd, in the course of a few interesting remarks, paid a high tribute to the excellent work done by the range officers and Reference Committee. The former included Lieutenant Cox, Private Parslow, Messrs. E. Bu- . chanan, J. D. Webster, and Private Tobin. The Reference Committee were represented by Captain • Ivenrick, Lieutenant Dormer, and Private N. F. . Haszard. These gentlemen, in their respective - departments, he said, achieved as much, if not more thait gentlemen similarly placed in the biggest New Zealand matches he had been connected with during the last 10 or 11 years. The work altogether had been most satisfactorily accomplished, and scarcely a moment's delay had occurred in the- whole conductof the meeting. He expressed himself as being particularly well pleased with his visit, and, judging from the favourable comments, from his men, he considered they were also well satisfied. Others also expressed themselves in a, similar way. The annual business meeting of the association was held at Tanner's Hall on Thursday night, Captain Kenrick presiding. The secretary (Captain W. H. Shepherd) read the minutes of the previous annual meeting, also the balance-sheet, which-were confirmed. Captain Shepherd, speaking as to tho difficulty •of obtaining a vote of £200 for the . association, sai«l that after much inquiry he had received a, definite reply from Lieutenant-Colonel Davies, who informed him that, the sum of £200 had been placed to his credit to be shot for on terms to be stipulated by himself (Colonel Davies). These terms Colonel Davies had decided as fol-lows:—£so-for AVaihi meeting and £150 for en Auckland meeting, within a short time. This was not an annual vote. The election of officers then took place, the previous officers being unanimously re-elected, with a few additions. The Council- was elected as follows:— Captain Mcintosh, Lieutenants Cox, White, and Dormer I Messrs. Kearsley, Buchanan, - and Webster. Mr. ' Kearsley was elected chairman arid a life member of the association. Captain W. H. Shepherd was unanimously re-elected secretary of tho association, .and . Mr. Webster treasurer. It was resolved, on the motion of Captain Kenrick, that every rifle club or company elect a delegate, through whom any complaints or suggestions may be forwarded to the association. Tho mover thought this would give ; country , clubs an . opportunity' to keep in touch with the association. A discussion took place as to the use of rifle-slings, some dissatisfaction having, been expressed, at the committee's recent decision. It was proposed by Lieutenant. Hubbard, and carried, " That the committee be asked to reconsider their decision as far as the teams' • match was concerned." The committee decided to allow competitors to use, slings, as they choose, :in that match on Friday. On the motion of Captain Ivenrick, it was agreed that the Management Committee draw lip a set of by-laws upon which ' the association shall work. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring members of the Council and the secretary. Tho volunteers all left for their respective homes this morning, being well pleased with their visit.
