OVER 400 AUCKLAND APPLICATIONS. : Tho Auckland Brigade Office had tip to yesterday received no less than 410 applications for enrolment in the Eighth Contingent, of which number 38 applicants are desirous of commissions.. The Wellington Trades Council carried last night, by 12 to 10, a resolution: " Condemning and repudiating the action of the Government in undertaking to send further troops to South Africa to assist in waging a hideous and unholy war of extermination, which we believe was begun and if: now carried on entirely in the interests of capitalists." It was stated that in the present position of the colony's finances, which had let! to tho discharge of a large number of workers, the Government were not justified in sending a further contingent. It . was decided to ask other trades councils to take similar action. Mr. Naugliton president of the _ Trades Council, has resigned as a protest against the above anti-war resolution, which, he says, in no way represents the opinions of the great mass of unionists or of the Labour party generally. LanccCorporal Haj, of the Seventh Contingent, is severely ill at Charfestown, with a contused back. : MEMORIAL AT DEVONPORI. A short time ago Mr. C. Dacre wrote to the Dcvonport Borough Council requesting the Mayor to call a meeting of the residents to find ways and means for a memorial to the two North Shore troopers who died at the Boer war. A meeting was held and a committee of ladies and ; gentlemen formed to raise the sum ot £100.' This amount was raised in three weeks, and an order has been sent to j England for a handsome< fountain centre, and a drinking fountain, which will be placed in the Council Chamber reserve.
