CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The Council o£ the Auckland Chamber of Commcrco met yesterday. Mr. D. K. Cald- ! well, president of the. Chamber, presided, and there were also present: Messrs. F. G. Ewington, Geo. Fowlds, M.H.R., W. Gunson, Graves Aiekiu, G. Scegner ; A. B. Roberton, J. Wiseman, and J. lioid. Bank Holidays: The president pointed out that great inconvenience was caused to traders by the frequent bank holidays. He referred especially to the banks closing for three days in Christinas' week. Mr. Roberton pointed out that New Zealand had 19 bank holidays in the year, a3 against nine in Victoria, and. 10 in New South Wales. It was agreed that till the Chambers of CommerCo in New Zealand be communicated with, urging a, joint protest to the Government in the matter. Steamer Service: A letter was read from New Zealand Shipping Company stating that the Abtea, which had been dispatched direct to " Auckland was not a tramp steamer, as stated by the Chamber, but on the contrary, was one of the smartest of the Shaw-Savill yno. Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co. also wrote protesting against ths Aotea being classed as a tramp. Federal Tariff A letter was read from the Premier stating that lie had read with, interest the Chamber's notes and evidence on the Federal tariff, and had forwarded the same to the Minister for Customs.
