POPULATION OF FIJI.
The census of the Fiji Islands, which was 3 taken on March 31, shows that the total L ' white population of the colony amounts to 1 2447,. being 411 in advance of the census of k 1891. The district showing the greatest increase of white population since 1891 is k Suva, where the number in that year was 3 given at 843, and in the present census " amounts to 1073. The total population of ' Suva, white and coloured, is 4735. , The J half-caste „ population has increased from k 1076 in 1891 to 1504 this year, or, alto--3 gether, 408 in number. The number of 1 Indian coolies has increased from 7468 in ' 1891 to 17,105 enumerated in the present " census- The whole of the immigrants introduced by the Fazilka on her first voyage 1 of this year are included in this census. The 3 proportion of males to females among this 1 class is about 197 males to 100 females, the ,T total numbers being 11,353 males and 5752 • females. The total Polynesian population 1 is now returned at 1950, and of these 1584 k are males and 366 females. The official s figures of the Fijian native population give fc the total as 3378, but the enumerator says : " " The insertion of these : figures, in the ,s language of the Registrar-General, is 'not V merely useless, but entirely misleading,' 13 since the native Fijian population totals anys thing between 90,000 and 95,000."
