The Premier visited Cheviot- to-day. and met the Relief Committee in the evening, v, when a report was presented stating thai? 60 applicants assessed their damage by tho > earthquake at £5340, and there were other applications which the committee had yet) to investigate. In other caces it was - r thought the applicants were in a position . to bear the loss. - The relief funds in • Christchurch amounted to about £800,-and - would probably reach £1000. An" expert " builder, estimated the cost of rougnly repairing the houses of those- who ; mosti*. needed help at £755, and the chattels destroyed in those cases were worth' about £1500. The Premier said that after what .;-| the colony had done in other cases, he felfc that if public subscriptions could be raised to £1000, the Government would take tha ; / responsibility of providing the : other £1200 required. . '
It has been definitely decided to pull down as much of Christchurch Cathedral spire as may be deemed necessary in the interests of safety. • " ■ ; ■ ; ' :
