PUBLIC SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION.

vS ■ - ' ANNUAL SPORTS. ' - ; •♦THE* BANNER WON BY BERESFORD- . 1 ; STREET. i The annual sports meeting, hold under tiro i■ auspices of the Publio •' Schools' Amateur j Athletic Association, . took place yesterday. In thp morning the weather ' looked so ' threatening that .the-committee met to consider the advisability > of >. postponing the function. Fortunately it was decided not to Hido so, for. the day cleared into one of perfect sunshine. This meeting is yearly looked forward to with great keenness by the pupils '/of the various schools and by. their parents. Nor are the teachers one whit less eager to see the meeting come to a successful issue. .. This unanimous interest was once more exemplified yesterday, not only by • the large crowd which assembled in the Domain • 'Cricket Ground to witness the event, but also by the largo fields which faced tho j* starter. The latter feature was most marked, ' especially in the 75yds championship for [ boys under 10, which attracted no less than 138 entries. In the race of a similar distance for boys ono year older, there were 125, and for boys under 10 116 entries. Many of the other events also produced fields of ■ from 70 to oyer 96. Considering the number 'of heats which this caused it necessary to ./ run tho races off in, the programme. of 34 events, was kept remarkably .well to time, tho work of the officials being most praiseworthy. • • , • .., ;. The championship events were fought out < with consistent and sportsmanlike, energy, , ttiost 'of them providing splendid finishes. The half-mile walk and. the high jump for ?■ boys under 15: were the most keenly contested events of the day, and aroused plenty v. of The championship -banner went to Beresford-street school by a majority If: of six points over Onehunga. This result >,was partly duo to the really good perform- \ ances of S. Salisbury, who annexed both the ; mile and half-mile events in capital style, v -thus placing 10 points to his school's credit. "Tho points, were five for a win, three for i second, and one for third. Tho following are the official calculations of the points for the : coveted banner, showing Beresford-street tho . : "trinners of chief 'honours—Beresford-strect, " ; 26 ; Onehunga, 20 ; Newton East, 19 ; -■ Ellerslie and Newmarket,*l6 ; Devonport, 14-. ; Parnell, ; 9 ; Wellesley-street, 8 ; Nel-son-street and Newton West, 3 ; ' Napier-;-street and Remuera, 1. , , Not by any means the least interesting .portion of the programme was that devoted ||fcopheV exhibitions by both girl; and boy pupils of dumb-bell, , bayonet, wand, and manual exercises, ai*d the physical drill com- ' petitions. The young people . concerned :showed remarkable proficiency, and fully domonstrated the utility of the knowledge im- *■ parted to them in these directions. It was gratifying to watch tho exercises performed ' by the' girl pupils which could not fail in S developing their physical qualifies benefiLj cially. The boys were especially good in their military exercises and marching, showg ing that we have in them the makings of a fine body of well-drilled volunteers. An impressive sight was a general manual display and a march • past by the whole of • the cadets of both sexes, to the strains of , "The British Grenadiers;"' played by the " band. .This display evoked great applause, and the marching of the Beresford-street Cadets was much admired. A unique dis.r'play was made; by the younger girls of the i Newmarket school, which claimed a lot of attention. Attired in white dresses, with coloured sashes, the little ones went through a. serious of graceful movements, and per- ; formed some manual exercises with half .hoops decorated with garlands. 'During the afternoon the lady teachers of j the various schools provided afternoon tea, ' .'which the visitors duly appreciated. '' The following committee worked with un- , ceasing energy, and secured a complete sue- .-, cess: Messrs. A. Hashing. R. Parry, W. N. pMcintosh, G. Thwaites, N. McKay, W. H. f £ , Draffin, J.
