THE CAVERSHAM ELECTION.

MR. SIDEY HEADS THE POLL. i[by telegraph.—PßESS association.] Dunedin, Thursday. The poll for the Caversham seat took place to-day. Despite the steady rain .the. polling was large. The results are as follows : — Sidey ... ... ... .. 1620 Ea.nir.haw ... ... ... 1515 Rally ... 1120 Bedford ... ... ... 149 Warren ... ... ... 122 Meikle ... 27 The last three forfeit their deposits. There was a large crowd at the declaration of the poll. None of the candidates got a good hearing, but Mr. Earnshaw had the worst reception, and some over-ripe eggs were thrown at him. Mr. Sidey's majority was 105. Mr. T. K. Side 3' was born in the Caversham electorate, where his father is the holder of considerable property. He received his education'at the Boys' High School and the Otago . University, where he took the degree of B.A. and LL.B. A solicitor by profession, he'has taken an active interest in literary and debating societies, and lias been a zealous worker in connection with the Caversham Presbyterian Church. After serving as borough eouncillor -he is now occupying the position of Mayor for the third term. He lias been connected with educational matters and has worked hard for the Dunedin Horticultural Society. His recent , election as a member of the Drainage Board showed he had the confidence of large numbers outside the Caversham district: Mr. . Sidey contested the Caversham seat as an independent, with considerable Opposition leanings, in 1896, .but was not successful. On this occasion he stood as a general supporter of the Government policy.
