MURDER IN NEW GUINEA
A BRITISH MAGISTRATE SHOT. Advices have been received at Thursday Island of the murder of M. Guilianetti, ActingResidcnt Magistrate of the Helena district, New Guinea, by escaped prisoners. A private letter says M. Guilianetti was staying at the Rev. 11. M. Dauncey's house, Helena, when lie was killed. Mr. Dauncoy was asleep in a room next M. Guilianetti when tho first shot was fired. Tho second shot was tired as Mr. Dauncey called out. On going to M. Guilianetti lie found him with a bullet wound right through his head. M. Guilianetti never moved, and in a few minutes was dead. The prisoners who did the deed escaped, and took with them four rifles and cartridges. Two of them were captured at night with three rifles in their possession. Others were captured afterwards. One of them had a terrible experience. In trying to cross a river lie was attacked by ;i crocodile. The monster had him in his mouth. The man was badly torn on both sides. It is presumed that tho convicts did not desire U.i kill Mr. Dauncey, because the man who fired the fatal shot looked into the room where Mr. Dauncey was lying, probably to see if he was asleep, and s isequoutly the missionary was within range of tho escapees, whom ho saw after noon of the day of the murder.
