Among General Baden-Powell's very early recollections is one of following his mother, who was being escorted into the dining-room by a tall, white-haired, spectacled man. The gentleman, turning round, caught night of the child following, and producing a new shilling offered him the glittering bribe to "run away." After a moment's hesitation young " Ste," as he was then called, took the shilling and desisted from pursuit. The.briber was William Makepeace Thackeray, and the general still prizes the shilling thus acquired, so many years ago.
