GOLF.

The golf links at One-tree Hill are still in excellent order, and as a consequence aro very well patronised for this time of year. At only two holes can any fault be found, and probably by the time of publication of these notes the llingrox and Elbow holes, to which I refer, will be as perfect as the rest of the course.

To satisfy those who may be inclined to doubt the perfect order of the course, I append the following detailed score:—Out: 5, 4, 4, 8, 4, 5, 6, 4, 3-43. In: 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 3, 5—35: total, 78. These figures were recorded by Mr. C. E. S. Gillies in a game played on Saturday last. The excellence of the score speaks for itself, but I might add that quite a number of reasonably easy putts were missed. To-day will see the commencement of the tussle between Messrs. O. E. S. Gillies, W. B. Colbeck, A. B. Lawrence and Harry Gillies for the possession of a trophy presented by Mr. A. E. D'Arcy for competition among these plyaors. The games, which are under match-play rules, should prove very interesting. A draw has been made, and Mr. Lawrence has to meet Mr. Colbeck, while the brothers Gillies oppose each other. To adopt the language of a sporting writer by "trying to spot the winner in one," I would name Mr. C. E. S. Gillies.

Hood, the local club's professional, arrived 10 days ago and seems very pleased with the links. Ho is astonished at their excellence.

Local golf beginners will no doubt avail themselves largely of the professional's services. Hood is proving himself an excellent coach.

The professional's quiet demeanour has already gained for him great respect. I have seen a large number of clubs made by him and can heartily recommend their inspection by those wishing new clubs. Hood is also an adept at repairing, and his arrival will remedy a long-felt want.

The committee of the Auckland Golf Club have fixed the scale of charges for coaohing at Is 3d per hour. This is more satisfactory than imposing a stated fee per round.
