PROTESTS FROM GREY LYNN AND

PONSONBY.

' At last night's meeting of the Auckland City Council Mr. C. J. Parr presented a petition signed by 208 residents and ratepayers of the borough of Grey Lynn and Arohhill Road Board district, protesting against the proposal to establish the newcity abattoirs in the district. The distance from the market and the dangers attendant upon driving cattle, etc., through a numerously populated district should, said the petition, be of itself sufficient reason, but your petitioners respectfully protest against the continued effort to make this district a receptacle for everything that is unpleasant and detrimental to the health and comfort of the residents. The petition was referred to the Finance Committee. Mr. Parr also introduced a deputation from Ponspnby and Grev Lynn, who desired to address the Council on the abattoirs questions. The deputation consisted of Messrs. J. ford, G. Gregory. John Currie, R. Watt and E Hough. Mr. Shackelford and Mr. Gregory spoke for the deputation. Mr. Shackelford paid there was a strong feeling in the Grey Lynn district against placing the abattoirs there. The Secretory for Agriculture wrote asking the Council to cancel the appointment of their inspector of slaughterhouses, as the f nS pection of slaughtering P%£°*™ was vested in the Department. The letter was also referred to the Finance Committee Mr. Julian had a motion on the order napor for the appointment of a special comnnttee to report on the abattoir but the Mayor pointed out that the ™ Committee had already done a great deal of work in connection with the matter, and at his request Mr. Julian withdrew his matiou. The Finance Committee will report on the question of site to next meeting of the Council, and before that date an opportunity will be given to members of the Council to view all the sites.
