Mr. T. H. Cook, who for the past decade has been head gardener to Lord Weinyss at Gosford, has been appointed head gardener to the King at Sandringham. At Aberlady lately Mr. Cook was entertained by a large party of friends and presented with some | valuablo tangible tokens of the respect in which ho is held. Mr. Connor, factor to Lord < \Vcmyss, presided, and. in name of the serI rants" in the Gosford Estate, presented Mr. ! Cook with, a silver service and a large selection of books. Mr. Selater (of Messrs. Thomas Methveh ami Sons, Edinburgh), also presented to Mr. Cook a solid silver salver as the gift of other friends in Aberlady and elsewhere. The Earl of Wemysa also made a very handsome presentation to Mr. Cook, who leaves Gosford with the respect and esteem of all who knew him. In a, largo tree in a garden at Zurich a pair of pigeons recently built their nest and I reared a pair of young ones. One day, while I the birds were absent, someone removed the I young ones, and on returning the hen ap- | peared greatly distressed at her loss. The j cock, however, fetched about fifty other pi- | geons, and together they devastated the garI den, the flowers and vegetables being dej stroyed in huge quantities. If sparrows fol- | lowed this example we should hav<» very I few gardens to look at at nil.
