Welcome Jack, contributing, sold at 2Ad and 3d. Business continues to show the improvement noted last week, but it must be acknowledged that thi3 is late for the spurt that usually takes place in the wholesale trade about this time of the year. The weather is exceedingly favourable for the business of the city, but the continued drought will have a serious effect on the pastoral and agricultural interests. Already it is said that the maize crop in the Bay of Plenty is suffering from the dry weather. Some of the growers who have been busy with other matters are now shelling again, so that the local market will probably be better supplied soon. The quantity to hand by the Vvairaana, W'aiotahi, and Clansman amounted to 600 sacks, and as it came to a bare market there were several good lines placed at 2s 3d on the wharf, leaving a still unsatisfied demand, while inferior samples had to be quitted at lower money. This time last year we were shipping to New South Wales and Quepnsland at remunerative rates, but as showing the affect, of interState freetrade within the Commonwealth Queensland is now supplying Sydney at 2a 6d f.o.b. Growers here quite recognise that it will only be an extraordinary drought in Australia to cause any demand from there. There is a steady inquiry for old potatoes from the South, about 300 sacks coming by the Elingamite, and these were readily placed. The present price is £3 10s ex store, and as there were only 200 on the Moura, it may be estimated that the prices will remain the same, as the requirements are fully up to the supplies. It is •thought in Christchurch that the farmers will not continue to supply at present rates, which are equal to about £1 at country stations, which, by the way, appears rather hard on those who refused £5 when there was a demand for Sydney, but at the end of the season they cannot hope for much improvement in value. Indeed it is more than likely that Sydney will be able to ship here soon. New potatoes are offering in larger quantities, and prices have receded. A few odd lines of oata have bsefi offering from the South at a slight reduction by sailer, but the local price is the same. Fowlwheat 13 still very scarce, and •at Southern quotations it hardly pays to sell here at the tariff rates.

Onions are now arriving in larger quantities, 186 bags and 259 cases being landed from the Zealandia, equal to a total of 20 tons. Some of these were Australian grown, and were of better quality than were landed last week. The New South Wales crop is reported exceptionally good, and a heavy yield is expected. The rest, of the onions to hand were Italian, and although they may be & little better the price has now eased to the level of Australian, buyers purchasing only for immediate requirements, in anticipation of lower prices as the season advances. Sales have been made from the wharf at £9 10s upwards, and ex store the quotations range from £9 103 for socks and £10 10s for cases up to £12. Since last week there has been a strong inquiry for. perennial rye grass, some 3000 packs having changed hands, presumably for Sydney, at an advance of 4d to 5d per bushel on late rates. Owing to the drought m Canterbury it is expected that firm rales wii." now rule. Hams and bacon arc selling freely at the steady advance already noted; that is, orders, are being freely given, but are not always executed, owing to the small stocks available. Christchurch in particular is very short, but some supplier, are to be had from Taranaki. Further supplies of rice are to hand, but sales are restricted. Linseed oil is firm at the advance noted, and kerosene is also held for higher prices. Castor oil and colza both seem a little firmer. All dried fruits are soiling rapidly, and seeded raisins are now getting scarce. There is a smaller demand for Levant raisins with the steady improvement in the quality of American. Tinned fruits are in good demand. Tinned whitebait is in good demand, both for local consumption and for Australia, but supplies are extremely short. Derby tobacco has been in very short supply, but a full shipment has just arrived per Inclraghiri. Now that it is too late to ship fungus to Hongkong for tho Chinese New Year, the local price has receded, and 3id is the best obtainable to-day. Tho price is likely to go still lower. Corrugated iron is scarce, and tome sizes are not procurable. Tin plates are lower.

Flax shows no change in value, the bulk of the supplies being sold under contract. . In the local produce market tho prices areas follow:— butter, lid; separatoi do., 7d; farmers' do., 6d; and second-class 53 per lb wholesale. Eggs are 8d per dozen wholesale. ' KAURI GUM MARKET.
