PARLIAMENTARY NEWS AND GOSSIP.

[BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Thursday. PAEROA TOWN LANDS. Considerable correspondence has passed lately between Mr. Jackson Palmer and the Minister for Lands regarding the sale of Paeroa town lands to Paeroa people. Mr. Palmer complains bitterly of the low valuation for improvements. There, however, now seems a likelihood of some settlement, as the Minister for Lands writes as follows:—"You are no doubt aware that these values were made some time ago, and that probably in some cases new buildings have been since erected. If the tenants agree to surrender their leases another valuation can be made, and no doubt it will be satisfactory to all parties; but until the tenants surrender no action can be taken." MANAWATU RAILWAY. The negotiations for the purchase of the Manawatu railway have apparently been resultless. The Premier wrote to the company on Monday, stating that the opinion of the Government as to their offer remained unchanged. He added that as the session was now nearing its termination, presumably the negotiations might be considered to be at an end. The company offered to yell some time ago at 65s 6d per share, and latterly at 62s 6d. The Premier offered 30s. There thus remains a difference of only 2s 6d per share between the two offers. There are 170,000 shares in the company. OATS FOR SOUTH AFRICA. A return laid on the table of the House shows that two lots of oats were shipped by the Government to South Africa 'for the Imperial authorities— tons in January, and 17,939 tons in. March. The price paid in each case was 24s per quarter of 3201b. ROTORUA SANATORIUM. Dr. Kenny, the resident medical officer at Rotorua," has, since his appointment, received £751 in fees foi attending private patients. He was not permitted private practice prior to December, 1399.
