AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

Tee Auckland City Council met last night. J The Mayor (Mr. Alfred Kidd) presided, and | there were also present: Messrs. Jas. Stich- j burv, .T. Court. J. H. Ilannan, P. Diguan, ; J. McLeod, .T. W. Hewson, J. T. Julian, A. j Rosser, A. K. Glove., J. Patterson, and C. j Grey. j Enteric Fever: The chief health officer of j the colony forwarded pamphlets on enteric j and typhoid fever for general information, , on the precautions necessary to prevent an , epidemic of this disease occurring. It was : agreed to circulate the pamphlets. _ ; Street Watering: The town clerk or Grey ; Lynn asked if the City Council would under- : take the watering of the Grey Lynn portion ; of Ponsonbv Road and Great North Ho , ! and at what cost. The letter was referred to ' the Streets Committee. !

Fort-street: Mr. C. R. Vickersnan, district engineer, wrote asking permission lot mail vans to stand on tho crossing in Fort-street to facilitate mail work at the post office. The Mayor moved that a reply be sent that the carts could not bo allowed to stand or. the crossing, but that the Council had no objection to the Post Office Department removing the crossing at their own expense. This motion was adopted. Electric Tramways: Mr. P. M. Hansen., attorney foi the Electric Tramways Company, wrote asking permission to drain manholes connected with the tramway system into the city sewers. The letter was referred to the Streets Committee.

Permit: The Leyland-O'Brien Timber Company wrote asking permission to erect a storeroom on an unused road near their mill. The letter was referred to the Streets Comtee.

Clarence-street: Mr. .1. H. Dalton wrote asking the Council if they intended to continue" Clarence-street, Ponsonbj, through his property. The city engineer reported that it would no doubt be an advantage to "have a communication through Mr. Daltou's property to O'Neill-street. The letter was referred to the Streets Committee.

Sewer; George Buchanan ATOte urging the Council to complete the work of running a sewer through his property at the back of Union-street, Freeman's Bay. The letter was referred to the Streets Committee.

Dublin-street: Eighteen ratepayers petitioned the Council to form and channel Dub-lin-ptreot, Ponsotiby. The letter was referred to the Streets Committee.

Tenders: The tender of Philip Birch, £96, for painting bridges, was accepted. The tender of Mr. Turrell, Newmarket, £109, for painting fences of parks, was accepted. For branch drains, Cemetery Gully, the tender of Sam White and Co.. £280. was accepted. For kerbing and channelling Custom-street, the tender of W. Hendry, £274 ]2s 6d, was accepted. For kerbing and channelling West-street, lie tender ol John Irwin, £135 6s 6d, was accepted. Public Library: Six tenders were received for preparing a catalogue of the reference library, the tenders ranging from £90 to £175. The Mayor moved that the lowest tender, Mr. Grossman, £90, be accepted. Mr. McLeod expressed doubt if the Council could get the library satisfactorily catalogued for £90. It was literary work, and he did not think it should have been tendered for. The Mayor said this was only the index part of the catalogue, and Mr. Grossman was thoroughly able to do the work. Mr. Grossman's tender was accepted. Volunteer Camps: Lieutenant Wynvard wrote asking permission for the Auckland Mounted Rifles to camn in the Domain from November 23 to 30. The Mayor mentioned that he had seen Lieutenant-Colonel Davies, who had promised to see that in future during camps in the Domain better provision should be made for the protection of property. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee.

City Market: Mr. R. IT. Abbott wrote, suggesting I'll at the City Market and Agricultural 1 Kali should bo let on. long, lease, say, 10 years. The present term of three years offered no inducement to improve cr build up a business of value. Messrs. Tooman and Co., U. Arthur and Co., Hall and Perkins, and E. Turner wrote, intimating that in deference to the wishes of fruitgrowers they intended to centralise their auction, businesses, and asking on what terms they could get the City Market for a period of years. The'letters were referred to the Finance Committee.

St. Mary's Road Drainage: Plans for the drainage of St. Mary's Road, Ponsonby, were laid on the table. Tenders are to be called returnable in . a month.

Gifts to the Library: The librarian reported that Mr. Jas Rurtt, Hcibson-street, had donated to the reference library "Life and Times of William TV., 1831" (Watkins), "Memoirs of Warren Hastings." 3v015.. 1036 (Gleig), " Monarchy of the Middle Classes of France," 1836 (Buliwer), and "Adventures of Gil Bias de Santillona," 4v015., 1807 (Lesage). The Rev. Dr. Kinder had presented a valuable engraved portrait of Goethe, also " Report of Commissioners of St. John's College, Auckland'' (by Dr. Kinder). Mr. Ed. Withy had donated volumes 9 and 10, completing his gift of Henry George's works in 10 volumes. The crifts were accepted, and the donors thanked.

Streets Committee: The Streets Committee reported as follows: Auckland Electric Tramways Company (Limited), as to subsidences in. streets: Reply in terms of the engineer's report, that the subsidences evidently took place through the tramway company breaking up the hard consolidated surface of the road, which allowed the stormwater to penetrate the earth, filling along the line of sewer, causing it to settle down. These sewers have been down many years, and probably the best attention was not given when they were constructed to thoroughly consolidate the filling in of the trenches, Provision is now made for ail drainage works to be carried out in a manner which will prevent future occurrences of a like nature M. McPherson, as to formation of Basque Road: Work to be done at a cost of £20; also kerbing in front of Khyber Pass reservoir; tenders to be called for the work. Auckland Gas Company, as to repairing gas trenches in footpath. Queenstreet: Reply that it will be necessary .'or the convenience of the public, and as a temporary measure, that the Gas Company spread metal waste over the trenches and tar the same. J". J. Thornes, re gully drainago'between Summer and "Vermont Streets: Reply that the work is included in the list of urgent drainage works, and will be don© in due course. ■ New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited), as to the access to their stores l?eing rendered dangerous by position of tram lines, Customstreet West: Reply, in accordance with the engineer's report, that the kerbing and die channelling of this road has been authorised, and immediate action will be taken to improve the approaches to the building. Auckland Harbour Board, as to widening Hobsonstreet, near wharf: Your committee recommend that permission be given to do the' work, the whole cost to be paid by the Harbour Board. The report was adopted. Legal Committee: The Legal Committee's report was adopted, as follows: Petition from (he cab proprietors of Auckland, asking- that a temporary permit be given to replicants, pending report from the traffic- inspector. for driver's license: Reply that the Council! cannot see its way to comply with the request. Librarian, submitting? offer frQm the secretary of the Te Kuiti Library to purchase a number of second-hand novels: Approved. Finance Committee: The Finance Committee reported as follows:—Town clerk, Parnell, submitting claim for share of vehicle license fees: Town clerk to write to the 'boroughs adjoining the city, to ascertain if they will agree to the city issuing all vehicle and drivers' licenses. Department of Health, re claim for share of insurance money on the contacts' hospital: The city solicitor to take proceedings for recovery from the Defence Department. The report was adopted. Finance: Mr. Hannan moved, "That the Finance Committee be instructed to examine and see if they cannot reduce the amount paid foi stationer} and advertising." The motion was adopted. Waterworks: Mr. Hewson moved, "That a return furnished to him at last meeting be sent to the Waterworks Committee for explanation, as the return showed there was an increase in the quantity of water pumped and an increase in the number of services, but a decrease of revenue." The motion was passed.
