LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL.

The final for the New Zealand ladies' golf championship was played off on Saturday at tho Cornwall Park Links between Miss Gillies (Auckland) and Mrs. Bidwell (Wairarapa). The* honours were gained by the former, who beat her opponent after a keenly-contested game by one hole. While congratulating Miss Gillies on her victory, she must also be congratulated on her steady play at the thirteenth and fourteenth holes, which enabled her to get all square at a time when the game looked very critical for her. Both players exhibited good golf form throughout. Mrs. Bidwell played a pluckygame, and, though she suffered defeat, :he game was so close that it was one of those reverses that almost counts as good as a victory. The play throughout the match was fully up to the championship standard, and tho putting was especially excellent. Mrs. Bidwell drove well on to the green, Miss Gillies being a little short. The former won the first hole in threeone up. At the second hole Mrs. Bidwell pulled her tee shot, Miss Gillies getting a good Straight ball. Both were on the green in three, and Miss Gillies, going down in two more, won all square. Both players drove at the thir.' hole short, but Mrs. Bidwell, playing a good approach, holed in four, and won the hole— ono up. Mrs. Bidwell drove to the edge of the green at the next hole: Miss Gillies half-topping her drive, found long grass! but, making a good recovery, the hole was halved in a good four—Mrs. Bidwell one tip. Mrs. Bidwell then, from a. good drive, put her second Mito the plantation, and with a weak third took four to reach the green; while her opponent, from a rather shot drive, opening up the hole with a good brassy shot past the plantation, won thi fifth —all square. Both players drove well to tho sixth hole, but Mrs. Bidwell. playing a fine brassy second over the brush hazard, made a really good approach, hoh 1 out in a really finely played four, won the hole, and was again one up. At the Ou fpost, the seventh hole, Miss Gillies pulled her drive, but put a good second on the green with her iron. " Mrs. Bidwell took four to reach the green, and Miss Gillies won the hole in five—all square. . Eighth (Ring rox): Both drove the hedge well, and wo-e on tho edge of the green in five. Miss Gillies' approach putt lay dead. Her opponent over-ran the hole, and, playing two more, gave Miss Gillies a stimie, which precluded her from winning the eighth hole (Ringrox) a half resulting—all square. The ninth hole was uneventful, and was halved in four. At the tenth hole (the Elbow) Mrs. Bidwell' got a good ball away, but. both played indifferent seconds. Miss Gillies reached tho green in three, while her opponent lay to the right off the green. She. however, went down iii two more, winning the tenth hole in five to Miss Gillies' six—Mrs. Bidwell ono up. Coming to the eleventh hole, from good tee sho'-s Miss Gillies had a poor lie for her second She made a bold bid for the wall with her third, and, pitching short, luckily jumped it. Her opponent made a good second, but from an indifferent lio played a splendid brassy third, which landed her ball about Bft from the hole, and gave her a really fine five Mrs Bidwell two up. The twelfth hole was uneventful, and was halved in five. Both drove well at the thirteenth hole, Mrs. Bid well going rather too much to the right, she approached too strongly, ran up the bank, and lodged ; while Miss Gillies ran her ball well on to tho green, and holed in four. Mrs. Bidwell, missing her putt for the half, lost the hole—Mrs. Bidwell one up. At the Jacob's Ladder (fourteenth hole), Miss Gillies put her tee shot on tho terrace below tho green, but recovered well with her second, getting on to the green. Mrs. Bidwell, who had put her tee shot into tho bank, lay right over the green in her fifth, and gave tip the hole, the game being once more all square. Miss Gillies put her tee shot into the hollow, short of the green, approaching the 15th hole: while her opponent topped her tee shot, and found her second hanging m long grass on the edge of tho green. She over-ran tho hole in her next shot, and Miss Gillies won tho hole in four, tho local player being for tho first time in tho match ono up. Miss Gillies drove well to the edge of the green when the sixteenth hole (the Pah) camo to be dealt with ; Mrs. Bidwell being short to tho left. However, she made a splendid approach, and her ball lay about Bft or 9ft from the hole. Miss Gillies nut her ball about a vard from the hole. Mrs. Bidwell holed her ball— great putt, considering the critical state of the game—leaving Miss Gillies an awkward putt for the half. This she safely accomplished/ and the hole was halved in three—Miss Gillies one up and two to play. At the Ramparts Miss Gillies, driving rather too much to the lc't, was caught by tho second bank, and her ball lay very heavy. Mrs. Bidwell drove more to the right, and, getting a clean be. reached the green in her third, while her opponent went, from trouble to trouble. Mrs Bidwell won the seventeenth hole, and the game stood all square and one to play An, proaehiiig the Amphitheatre, Mrs. Bidwell sliced her tee shot to the far bank, and her pall, after running down some way, lodged in heavy grass. Miss Gillies, pulling her drive, was somewhat lucky in finding her ball lying clear She lay dead in three, while it took Mrs. Bidwell five to do the same. Miss Gillies holed out in four, thus winning* the match by one hole. "

This handsome challenge cup, which was presented to the club by Mr. S. Thome George, has been held for the past six months by Mr. W. N. Leatham. The match is under handicap, and there should be a large entry, as the interest in golf matters is keen at present. The club has, through Mr. T. Brassey, who is now in London, secured the services of a high-class professional, who leaves London for Auckland at the end of this month. This should be a great boon to golfers.
