TO SEW YORK IN FIVE DAYS.

WHY BEREHAVEN OFFERS ADVANTAGES AS A PORT.

Fbom London to New York in five days. This is what is promised if the proposed scheme to convert Berehaven into a Transatlantic port becomes an accomplished fact.

And to all appearances Queenstown is to have a powerful rival. The Bill sanctioning the construction of the necessary pier at Berehaven was passed through Parliament at record speed. At one time the Admiralty saw fit to block the way, but any opposition contemplated was brushed aside by the aid of correspondence and deputations. Now the way is dear—provided the money is forthcomingfor materially lessening the voyage between England and America-.

The scheme, as propounded by Mr. L. G. I-Vazei, the engineer, embraces the construction of sixty-four miles of railway of the standard Irish gauge, connecting Bantry and Keninaie with Berehaven. The lines will be constructed so us to be suitable for working heavy trains at express speed. At Berehaven a deep-water pier, having 40ft of water at low title, will be constructed in connect with the railways, enabling the largest American liner to come alongside the pier, the passengers being enabled to step from th r deck of the vessel into the Pullman car.

The pier will be available fo. any quick line of steamers which may wish U. call at the port. And, in addition, it is proposed to provide a special fleet ol vessels of large tonnage and of not less than twenty-five to twenty-si- knots for service between New York and an English port. These vessels will call at Berehaven, which is only a few miles off the usual course, giving a weekly service, and making the passage within four days and a-half. The journey from London to Berehaven can be accomplished in alwut fourteen hours, thus completing the distance from London to New York in five days.
