By Telegraph.— Association.— CONTROL OF NEW GUINEA. Sydney, October 11. As the Commonwealth assumes control of New Guinea the Imperial Government has refused to contribute £7000 yearly to the cost of administration. This amount will be guaranteed by the States.
THE LIBEL LAW.

Replying to a deputation, the Premier gave a curious reason for the hitherto persistent refusal of Parliament to amend the libel law. While recognising the need for amendment, he said it was difficult to get a Bill through because newspapers did not deal too tenderly with members. This want of tenderness lay in reporting those scenes which unfortunately occurred in Parliament, and which members afterwards regretted.
THE ARIADNE CASE.

Bail was refused in the Ariadne case till the arrival of the original warrants, when the application may be renewed.
AN INVENTOR KILLED

Mr. Allsopp, a well-known civil engineer, was killed to-day while conducting experiments at a foundry a/.; Newcastle with a turbine, which was calculated to drive it, steamship 60 miles an hour, with a speed of 15,000 revolutions, and with a pressure of 1201b. The new invention had just reached 10,000 revolutions when the outer casing burst. The fragments flew in all directions, and Mr-. Allsopp was struck on the left temple, and instantaneously killed. His assistant and 20 workmen had some remarkable escapes. IMMIGRATION RESTRICTION. Mklbotxbnb, October 11. The Immigration Restriction Bill, which has leached the Senate, is likely to cause the first difficulty between the two Houses. An amendment has been proposed similar to that rejected by the House, excluding all coloured labour absolutely, and there is i reasonable chance of such being passed.
