THE PENGUIN. M.S. surveying ship Penguin returned to port yesterday after doing some survey work in the gulf, and proceeds to the Bay of Plenty on Tuesday next.

THE SONOMA. The mail steamer Sonoma is due from Sydney this morning, and proceeds on to Pago Pago, Honolulu, and San Francisco at 2 o'clock this afternoon.

THE ZEALANDIA. The Uuddart-Parker steamer Zealandif is expected to arrive from Sydney late to-mor-row night, and will anchor in the Stream for inspection by Dr. F. W. Sharraan (the port health officer) and the Customs authorities.

THE ELINGAMITE. The Huddart-Parker steamer EUngcimit* leaves Gisborne for Auckland to-day, and is expected to arrive to-morrow morning. She proceeds on to Sydney on Monday afternoon.

THE RAKANOA. The Union Company's steamer Rakanoa is due at this port from Fiji on Thursday next with a cargo of raw sugai for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company.

THE JESSIE CRAIG. The Auckland barque Jessie Craig,, which arrived at Wellington from Newcastle on Thursday last, made a very fine passage across, tier time being a record one of 6 days 10 hours. On discharge of hei cargo of coal tho barque sails for Kaipara to load timber for Sydney. -

THE OMAPERE. The Uiwon Company's steamer Omapere, Captain E. G. Button, arrived from Westport, Wellington, Napier, Gisborne, and coast ports last evening with a cargo of coal. etc. The purser reports that the steamer left Gisborne at 11 a.m. on the 24th inst., and finished working the coast as far as Awanui at 3 p.m. 'on die 26th. Passed Mercury Island at noon yesterday, ami arrived as above. Experienced moderate north-east breezes and sea on the coast, followed by light winds, beam sea, and thick, rainy weather to arrival.

• l', A NEW SCOW. The new scow which Messrs. Bailey and Lowe are building to the order of Messrs. J. Biddick and Sons, will be launched on Wednesday morning next. The scow, which is to he named the Vesper, is 80ft overall, 21ft beam, with a draught of 2ft, and has been specially constructed for the cattle-carrying trade. The planking is all of the best heart Jjr kanri, the frames being of pohutukawa, '^wl 18 coppered and copper-fastened hLnJ« tb water-line, and throughout has toeen vers: stronsly constructed. All the

necessary fittings for the safe carrying of cattle have been placed in the vessel. The Vesper is ketch-rigged, the sails and rigging having been supplied by Messrs. Ross and Ansenne, and the ironwork by Mr. W. A. Reid. Taken altogether, the Vesper is one of the finest vessels of her class ever turned out by a local firm, and whilst having good cargo-car-rying capacity, should develop a fine rate of speed.

NEW PISHING BOAT. Messrs. Bailey and Lowe will launch from their yards this morning a very smart 24ft fishing boat, which they have just built to the order of Mr. George Kmtage. of Chandler's Island, near Mahurangi. The new boat has been built on the frame principle, the timbers being of kauri and the frame of hardwood. She has been named the Spray, and in thoroughly up-to-date in every particular. A great many of the owner's ideas have been worked into the construction of the boat, which, while put down a3 a fishing boat, has more of the yacht in her appearance. All of the fittings on deck are of brass, and one feature is that the rowlock socket and plate and backstay cleat are all in one piece. Another feature is that the tiller is flush with the deck, thus preventing the mainsheet being fouled, as is usual in the majority of boats of this class. The sails, which are of union duck, were made by Messrs. Ross and Ansenne. and all the rigging and fittings are of the best. THE DIRECT STEAMERS.
