SHOCKING RAILWAY FATALITY

[BY TFXEGRAPII.OWN* CORRESPONDENT.] New Plymouth, Monday. Another shocking railway fatality occurred here to-day. As the four p.m. train from New Plymouth to ITawera was going through Devon-street, Major Brown, after just purchasing lish from a stand close by, went to cross the line, and was caught by the cowcatcher of the engine, and dragged some distance underneath the engine. When the train was stopped the body was removed, life being inct. ' Major Brown was over 70 years of age, and deaf He did not. hear the whistle or the cries of the porter to stand back. Deceased was a very old identity. An inquest will be held on Wednesday. A Press Association telegram states: — Major Brown was an old Taranuki settler, arriving in 1811. He was the first superintendent of the province, and took a prominent part as an officer in the Maori war. He was a representative several times in the House, and latterly was a J.P., and also an interpreter He leaves a widow and several children, one boy being in South Africa. Great sorrow is being expressed at his death, and there is much outcry at the danger of the cr tug.,
