FATAL ACCIDENT IN A MINE.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Thursday. Mr. John Wilcox, a well-known ex-Thames mine manager, sustained such serious injuries in the Dounybrooke Gold Mining Company's mine, West Australia, yesterday, that he succumbed shortly afterwards. The sad information was cabled to Mr. Iheodore Wood, of Pollen-street, late last evening, by Mr. F. Link, the general manager of the mine in question, with a request that the news be 'broke;, 'to Mrs. Wilcox, wife of the deceased, who lives in Clarence-street, Parawai. No particulars were given in the cable as to the cause of the accident. The deceased, who was 58 years of age, was well known throughout the whole of the Hauraki peninsula, he having at one time been manager of the old Dixon and North Devon mines, at the head of the Moanataiari Creek, and also manager of one or more mines in the Coromandel district. He also a few years ago was manager of the Morning Star mine, at Reefton, and was at another period in charge of a mine, at Preservation Inlet. He was a thoroughly experienced miner, and was greatly esteemed by all who knew him.
