COST OF SCHOOL-BOOKS.
Me. Monk is well-advised in recommending Boards of Education to agree upon a uniform set of schoolbooks for the whole colony. But it is very much more necessary that Boards should definitely fix and settle the school-books to be used in their own individual districts, and thus avoid what has long been a very general cause of complaint. Latitude to school-teachers, option of approved books, permission to use books not set down as necessary, are doubtless great aids to education when the teacher is wise and disinterested and the parent able and willing to pay. But the average State school teacher is inferior in discrimination to the educational authorities and to many parents the continuous charges made for books of various kinds is a noticeable burden.
