AUCKLAND SHAREMARKET.. _ ; The market was quiet yesterday. , In investment lines there were sales in Taupiri Coals at 18s 6d, Westport Coals at 80s, and Kauri Timbers (contributing) at Is 3d. Other stocks had fair demand, without business. In mining lines very little activity was shown,-and prices tor the most part showed a downward tendency. Talismans, at 245, were looked for up to 22s 6d, and Barrier Reefs had buyers at Is 2d, with sellers at Is 6d, but no business was recorded. -' ■ THE GOLD RETURNS. TOTAL FOR SIX WEEKS, £55,715. The total of the gold returns for the Auckland district for the pa,st six weeks is £55,715 5s 6d, which is the second highest of the six periodical totals of this year's output so far published. The returns for the first six months of 1901 exceed those of the first six months of 1800 by £49,815 10s Bd, which is an encouraging sign that the bullion producers of the North Island are more than maintaining their average output. The present total of £55,715 is made up as follows:—Ohinemuri, £46,979 17s lOd; Thames, £4202 5s lid; Coromadel, £4533 Is 9d. TAIRUA BROKEN HILLS G.M. CO. The low level on the reef in the Tairua Broken Hills Gold Mining Company's mine has beer extended to a total distance of 140 ft. The lode has been very much broken, but is now looking better. The dish prospects are also better, but not yet payable. A further 45ft requires to be driven to cut the junction of Seaver's lead and the Blucher reef. PAEROA WARDENS COURT. The Chelmsford Gold Mining Company have crashed and treated at their battery, at Upper Tairua, 200 tons of ore for a yield of bullion valued at £321. The amalgam from this 200 tons yielded £242, and 105 tons of tailings yielded £79 from the cyanide vats. The remainder ot the tailings have yet to be treated. A soft class of country, mixed with pieces of quartz and small boulders, still continues t> be penetrated in the bore-hole. A total depth of 124 ft was attained up to four o'clock . to-day. DEEP LEVEL SCHEME. - [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CO-RESPONDENT.] Thames, Thursday. At to-night's meeting of the Borough Council, a copy ol a circular issued by Mr. C. A. Harris, in connection with his proposed new scheme for testing the deep levels of the Thames Goldfield, was brought up for consideration. One or twt 01 the members of the Council spoke somewhat disparagingly of the scheme, but the majority were of opinion that any scheme which would tend to benefit the district should be fully considered, and that in the present instance it was the duty of the Council to go into the matter to see whether Oi not it could render any assistance to the promoter.
