INSTITUTE OF JOURNALISTS
[by TELEGRAPH. association.] Cjiristchitrch, Thursday. A meeting of the council of the Institute of Journalists was held to-day. Mr. Camcross, M.H.R., wrote stating that he would be pleased to again introduce his Libel Bill this session. The council decided to request him to introduce a clause to meet the difficulty disclosed by the recent decision of the Appeal Court, that the criminal code made no provision for prosecution in the case of criminal libel and also to approach the Government and see if they would be willing to take up the Bill. An opinion was read from the lion, counsel of the institute, to the effect. that the institute could not register, under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act, as an industrial union, and that it was a fully incorporated body undei its own Act ot 1895. Mr. T. Clarkson was elected auditor in the place of Mr. P. Nolan, who had resigned. The draft annual report was agreed to. It was decided that the annual meeting be held at Wellington on August 26, and to recommend that the headquarters be at Dunedin for the coming year. The following officers were nominated : — President, Mr. Cohen (Dunedin); vice-presi-dents, Messrs. Gresley, Lukin (Wellington), W. H. Triggs (Christchurch), and A. S. Reid (Auckland); secretary, M|r. G. R. Allen (Christchurch); treasurer, Mr. W. J. Walker; auditor, Mr. J. Hutchison (Dunedin). The matters placed for the consideration of members at the annual meeting include proposals to establish benefit and insurance schemes, and to register under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act.
