j [FROM CUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] HAMILTON. THE Hamilton Chess.Club handicap tourney has been brought to a conclusion. The contest was such a close one that up to the playing of tho very last game: it was almost impossible to pick the winner. This is a feather in the cap of. the bandicappers. The .first six players are within half a point of each other. The following are the principal scores:—-Lye, 14* wins. Li-losses; Stevens, 14 wins. 2 losses; Going, 13i wins, 2J losses. Messrs. McCrea (scratch), Woraley, -Home, Blackburn, and Rolleston were all close up. : I regret to report the outbreak of disease on a farm at Tamaliore, which there is only two much reason to fear is anthrax. Four beasts have died/and the post-mortem examination made by Mr. Clayton, the Government veterinary surgeon, evidenced most of the symptoms of that' disease. Specimens have been sent to Mr. Gilruth for bacteriological examination. In the meantime the most rigid precautions are being taken to prevent the spread of. the disease, which is contagious, but not infectious, bo that if isolation is rigidly applied there is little danger of its spreading. ' CAMBRIDGE. MR. W. J. HUNTER held his usual monthly stock sale at Cambridge on Saturday. Good cows at calving and to calve in August and September sold at prices ranging from £5 bs to £8; choice heifers at calving and forward to calve, £5 to £7; strong calves of mixed sexes. £M9s 6d to £2 ss: well-bred two-year-old heifers. £3 10s to £3 17s 6d; trash-con-ditioned cows. £3 10s to £4 6s; fat cows and heifers, £5 5s to £5 15s; 75 hoggets sold, at 6s 6d each. A lot of sundries, produce, etc.. made the usual prices. A number of fruit and ornamental trees from Mr. Jno. Sharps nursery brought satisfactory prices. , PATERANGI. •" AT the meeting of the School Committee on Wednesday, it was decided to erect a flagstaff if the cost was not too heavy, and a subcommittee was appointed to make inquiries as to cost, etc. A meeting of the Library Committee was held subsequently, when the secretary reported that 32 new books had been placed on the shelves, and about 20 more are to follow. It was decided to hold a concert in September in order to raise funds. Recently a Ladies' Missionary Society was started in connection with the' Waikato West Pesbyterian Church, - with the object of 5 assisting the Maori mission. The Rev. Walter Smith is president, and Messrs. Robert Kay and Jaines Ryburn, vice-presidents Miss E. Mackv, secretary; and Miss B. Germann, treasurer; and Mrs. Allcock. president of the Working Committee. The committee, at its first meeting, decided to obtain a supply of flannel and serge,. and :to hold fortnightly sewing-bees -at various residences. "V7AIBT. l THE annual meeting of the "Waihi branch, of the Thames Miners' Union was held, on .Saturday night. Mr. W.H. Potts (president of the parent society) occupied the chair, and gave a most impressive address, which was well received. ;, The balance-sheet, duly audited, was submitted.■■< and unanimously adopted. Several important matters bearing on the present contractus? svstem were discussed, and suggestions made to be subsequently acted upon by the union.
