[by telegraph.—PßESS association*.] Mangaweka, Wednesday. Great indignation has been caused here by the imposition of a sentence of six months' imprisonment on an old settler, J. Gardner, for being drunk and using obscene" language. A petition is being signed protesting against the sentence. Gardner is the father of a large family of young children. • Westport, Wednesday. • Two: of the largest risks yet covered in the colony by accident insurance under the Employers Liability and Workers' Compensation Act, were effected at Westport in the past two days by the Government Insurance Department,, viz., for the Westport ' Harbour Board and the. Buller County Coun- '■\ .- Curistchurch, Wednesday. A man. named -Walter Day, who 'was locked up for vagrancy by the Lyttelton police yesterday afternoon, died in the cell this evening. V , v . T
