WAIHI EXTENDED U.M. CO. In the south-east drive from the Waihi Extended Gold Mining Company's shaft more quartz stringers have been met with, and water is coming from them. The manager has no doubt, that a change is coming, and from appearances considers that an ore body is not far away, and that a day or two should enable him to forward good news.

NEW WHAU G.M. CO. In the New Whau Gold Mining Company's mine, at the Thames, the country in the drive on the leader at the. Sons of Freedom level is still very tight, resulting in rather slow progress. There are signs of sandstone country coming in again on the hangingwall of the leader. At No. 1 level the winze on the same leader is down Bft. Nice sandstone is lx'ing penetrated, and a breaking-down of the lode will take place this week. Above the level No. 14 stope has been brought along to the end of the ground. In the quartz broken last week there was a good deal of nice-looking antimony and other good minerals embedded in. the stonegenerally a good indication of gold being in close proximity.

BARRIER BEEFS G.M. CO. In the Barrier Reefs Gold Mining Company's mine 11 stopes, varying in length from 30ft to 240 ft. have been in operation. Work is to be resumed in a day or two in the drive east of the crosscut at No. 2 level, and also the main tunnel. Surface prospecting is still being carried on at different points. ' "

YOUNG NEW ZEALAND G.M. CO. Work has been continued in the low level of the Young New Zealand Gold Mining Company's mine, at Waitekauri, during the past fortnight, and the main drive is in a total distance of 725 ft. THAMES PROSPECTING SCHEME. [BX TELEGRAPH.OWN" CORRESPONDENT] Thau es, Wednesday. Mr. J. W. Walker is still at Thames, in connection with his prospecting scheme. He has lodged a request with, the Thames Harbour Board, asking that body to grant him a section of the foreshore lying between the Shotover and Shellback Creeks, and facing the Tarani Road, in order that the same may be used partly for a mullock tip and partly as a site for a reduction plant. He has also applied to the Thames County Council for its assistance in securing water rights over an area including the upper portion of the Billy Goat Falls, at the head of the Kauaeranga Valley.

TAIRUA MINING, [tiioii our. own correspondent.] Thames, Wednesday. Mr. Joshua Jackson, in company with Mr. Ashton, one of the directors of the Chelmsford Gold Mining Company, returned to the Thames this morning, after a visit to the upper portion of the third branch of the Tairua Kiver, wnere they have been inspecting the recent discovery made by Mr. John Collins, formerly the prospector and manager of the Chelmsford mine. The find has occurred in what is known as the Taniwha Syndicate's claim, on a branch spur of the main range. Messrs. Jackson and Ashton state that they are well pleased with the surface show, and the various leaders forming the ore body, and have given instructions for four men to put in a tunnel to intersect the reef formation at a point about 60ft underneath where the discovery has been made. It is anticipated that "from 100 ft to 120 ft of driving will accomplish that object.

MONOWAI GOLD MINES. [FROM OUR OWN* CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Wednesday. Crushing operations on behalf of this company have been in continuous progress since the Bth hist., and the concentrates that have been accumulated since then have maintained a good average value. It is intended to forward these to the Thames for shipment to Sydney next week, if the weather holds up, so that carting can be accomplished. Mr. Hogarth states that he lias commenced cyaniding th'o tailings accruing at the battery as the result of the present crushing operations, and he is hopeful of being successful in extracting a good percentage of the bullion they contain, as the ore which is coming to hand from No, 3 level is not so heavily charged with copper as was the case with the ore 'won from the upper levels. The prospects in the mine upon the main lode at No. 5 level continue as good as ever they were, and the reef itself still maintains its average size of 33ft. A good class of ore is still being bagged from the rich vein in the hangingwall section of the reef.
