dttAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S WINTER MEETING.

FIRST DAY. (l*Y TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, Wednesday. The Hawke'a Bay .Jockey Club experienced gloriously fine weather for the opening day of their winter meeting. The attendance was the largest the club have yet had and the racing was good. There were no ink-baps of any consequence, though several spills occurred in the steeplechase and hurdle events. The sum of £4212 was invested on the totalisatar, the largest dividend being £21 15s on Derringcotte in the Winter Handicap. Moifaa, the hero' of the Wanganui and (treat Northern Steeplechases, added still further to his laurels by carrying 12sr, to victory in the Hawke's Bay Hurdle Race in the good time of 3m. 545. lie paid his supporters the nice dividend of £8 6s. Venture, Ban do Vie and Waitio led ever the first hurdle, and at the manuka Eau de Vie and Venture rose together, Waitio pulling double in third place, with Stanley and 'IV Rehunga next. All successfully negotiated the sod wall and from this point Waitio went to the front. At the double post-and-rails Eau de Vie came down. The water was next successfully taker, all the horses jumping splendidly. Yenti.re and Stanley were hard at work half-a aide from home trying to get. alongside of Waitio. but to no purpose. At the last jump, however, Stanley got alongside of Waitio and gave promise of a close finish, but after a few strides the mare came away again and won by a. couple of lengths from Stanley, with Venture half-a-dozen lengths oil third and T» Rehunga last. After a little trouble at the post Mr. Piper trot his horses in line and mode a splendid start from a standstill. .Jabber and Arnourcux carried on the running: for ;* few yards when Jadoo ran up into tirst place. At 'lie back Jadoo had increjusofl her lead, while Arnourcux was second and Jabber third. Little change took place until reaching the home turn, when Daphne, Jabber and Derringcotte closed up. Jadoo was the first to give way to Derringcotte opposite the grandstand. Here Jabber came with a solid run, but after a determined effort he suffered defeat by a short head from Dorringcotte, with Jadoo two lengths awav third. Time, lm, 54 4-ss. Dividend, £21 15s. ' From a good send-off Cossack took the lead, and soon an Indian file was established, as fully two lengths divided each candidate. Cossack maintained bis advantage until entering the straight the first time, with Tiroa, Woodthorpe, Mangatahi, St. Just. Andromeda, and Musketoon in that order. Passing the stand Tirea was in front by three lengths from Woodthorpe and St. Just, while Heriniuiue was closing up. At the railway bend Woodthorpe and Herminins came through, and went in pursuit of Tirea, and after a close contest down the straight Woodthorpe got home comfortably by a length from Herminius, with Tirea three lengths away third, and St. Just next. Time, 3m. 49 2-ss. Dividend, £5 Is.

These were the first two past the stand, with Roller lying next, followed by Social Pest, Scallywag, and Bush Rose. Oceur dp Lion cut up badly near the caretaker's cottage, and took no further part in the race, being pulled off. Sweeping round the back stretch, there was very little change, but as the horses turned into the straight Evening Wonder and Hautonga fell back, being beaten, while Roller took eommand, Moifaa and Bush Rose both making an effort. Roller had a good lead, and looked all over a winner, but Moifaa came at him just at the last, fence, and, landing over the jump a little in front, the Crreat Northern Steeplechase winner had Roller settled, and ran in by two lengths to the good. Bush Rose being three lengths away third. Time, 3m. 545. Dividend, £8 6s.
