,e. The Devonport Borough Council met la.st evening, the Mayor (Mr. M. Nicool) occu- ! pying the chair, and there were also present: Messrs. H. J. Baulf, J. A. Walker, F. E. Mason, W. J. W. Philson, R. Logan, jun., Wm. HamUey and R. H. Duder. Bend-street: A petition was received from Bond-street residents complaining of the present unsatisfactory state _of the street and asking the Council to nave the street put into a proper condition. Reducing the Staff: The Mayor stated that 'owing to a large sum the Conned had decided to expend in the various works of the borough, it was found necessary to reduce the number of men employed to the foreman of works and two labourers. J..10 three men, he raid, could efficiently carry out the present work in hand, and by so doing it would relieve the Council of considerable expense. Expenditure on Works, etc.: The following is an account of the expenditure on the various works in the borough the Council has in hand:—Drainage loan account: l!e----r-eipts, credit balance, £138 12.5 4d : expendireengineer's fee (balance), £100; works in hand/£3B 12s 4d : total, £138 12s 4d; amount already expended on roads, £1420; boundary connections, in excess oi estimate, £370. Kcncral account (estimates): Uc-ecipts--Arrears of general rates, £50; refund Auckland Harbour Board, £43: subsidy, £187; license fees, £100; rents and arrears, £25: transfer from wale:-, £175: refund, nans and cisterns, £561: rate ai lit' in the £. £1320: total, £2461. Expenditure general account. £2200; Jubilee Avenue drainage, £52: Tudor-street drainage, £46; Ann-street North, Hartley's, £8; Spraggon's corner, £110; administration, £450; Hospital anrl Charitable Aid Board, £246; lighting. £109; public works, £100: paths, £315; foreman of works, £25: streets and works, £580; miscellaneous. £100: total. £4321. "he r.hovo leaves the overdraft at March 31, 19C2, at £1860. Victoria Road: On (he motion of Mr. Walker, it was decided to proceed with the work of metalling Victoria Road as soon as possible. New Drains: It was resolved to lay new drains in Jubilee Avenue and Tudor-street as soon a,s the Council found it convenient to do so. Removal of Shell and Sand : Mr. Philson moved, and it wa.> carried, " That no future applications for the removal of shell arc! sand from tho Cheltenham Beach be grant- : cd." The mover stated that it was a shame to see the manner in which the beach was being destroyed by persons removing the sand, ; etc.

Revising of By-laws: A committee 'was sot up to revise the borough's by-laws. Accounts: The following accounts wore passed for payment:—General account, £89 lis Id; drainage account. £98 8s 2d ; waterworks account, £29 53 lid.
