DRUNKEN WIVES.
A HUSBANDS' PROTECTION SOCIETY
On" Sunday afternoon (May 12) a conference of husbands afflicted with drunken wives was held at St. George's Hall, Westminster Bridge Road, called at the instance of Mr. R. A Bender, of the Newington Reform Club, Walworth. The object of the conference was the formation of a Husbands' Protection Society. Mr. T. Ryan presided. The attendance was not large, the reason assigned being that hundreds of sufferers would not attend for fear of exposure. Some horrible and distressing tales were told of wrecked homes and ruined lives ill consequence of drunken wives, and it was pointed out on legal authority that while the wife had redress against "her husband j the latter had no remedy against his wife, j who could pledge his furniture or break up j his home at will. It was resolved to form I a Husbands' Protection Society Against | Drunken Wives. A resolution was passed in ; favour of amending the Bishop of Winchesj ter's Bill so as to reach drunken wives, and j it Mas resolved that copies of the resolutions be sent to the Prime Minister, the ! Home .Secretary, members of Parliament, and the Bishop" of Winchester.
