On Monday next i Miss Hmuiio Owen, from the Savoy 'theatre, '• Louden, will make her first appearance in I New Zealand. > McADOO JUBILEE SINGERS. • The -Jubilee Singers again drew a satis--1 factory house at the Agricultural Hall last 1 evening, and the audience were delighted I with the various glees, coon and plantation l songs that were rendered. .Miss Gibbons | sang •• The Lost Chord" very feelingly, and j Mr. Collins was markedly successful with a new plantation song, and in the singing of "The Dear Homeland." The same programme will he given this evening, and a natinee is announced for Saturday afternoon next. MUSICAL MATINEE SOCIETY. The first concert of the present season I under the auspices of the Musical Matinee I Society was held in St. Sepulchre's Parish Hal! yesterday, before a good-sized audience. A most enjoyable programme was presented, which evoked its due share of appreciation. Madam Chambers was the vocalist, and contributed, in her usual finished style, "My Heart and Lute" (Kjerulf), "Slumber Song" ! (Hill), and "Song of Sunshine" (Goringj Thomas). Miss Bulger gave an excellent I rendition of the piano solo, " Der Ring des j be gen" (Wagner- Brassin), and with j Miss A. L. Colegrove was heard later in a j well-played duo for two pianos, "Rondo" i (Chopin). Hen- A. L. Kreutzer was down j for three violin solos. " Legende" (WieI niawski). Barcarolle" (Spohr), and " MoI men: Musical" (Sehubert-Papini), in which I ho displayed his talent to great advanj tage. Miss Batger's accompaniments were j played with much taste.

| I ATHEN.F.UM LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY. I A meeting of the Athenaeum Literary and I Debating Society was held on Tuesday : night, at the club rooms, Queen-street. The I president (Mr. M. Aldis) occupied the chair. : Owing to the very unsettled state of the I weather less than the average number of I moml*ers attended. One now member was i proposed, .and. the ordinary business being i disposed of, the president stated that the I executive wen endeavouring to arrange the j annual debate between this society and the I Auckland University, but arrangements wore not yet complete. The speakers for the evening were Messrs. .i. 1?. Graham, Limit- | ing, A. G. Jarrett. and P. Phoney, who j gave short speeches on " A Favourite i Hobby," " Bee-keeping.' " Good Hand- | writing," "poultry-raising." "Gardening,'" j in the order named. A huge amount of ini formation was the result of the debr.te, and i a very pleasant and instructive evening was ! passed. ' ' EDEN AND EPSOM LAWN TENNIS CLCB'S "AT IiOME." The Choral Hall presented an animated tip- ! pearance last evening, when the Kden and ; Epsom Lawn Tenuis and Croquet Club held I their annual "At Home." The interior of i the building was liberally hung with bunting. i and the tout ensemble during the progress iof the dan.-os was very pretty. About 150 ] couples entered into dancing with spirit, and ' this enjoyable form of amusement was inI dulged in till an early hour. The catering was carried out entirely by the ladies of the club. LECTURE ON BOMB. At the Church of Christ, West-street. last I evening, before a moderately large audience, t a limelight lecture, entitled, "Rome: AnI cient and Modern," was given by Mr. George ! Aldridge. The lecturer proved himself to ! be well acquainted with his subject, and was i listened to with much attention. At the j conclusion of the lecture Mr. Aldridge was ! accorded a vote of thanks. J LIBERAL AND LABOUR FEDERATION. I LIBERAL AND LABOUR FEDERATION. j The Auckland Liberal and Labour Fedcra- ; Hon held its annual meeting in the CookI street Hall yesterday evening, Mr. P. J. i Nerheny (vice-president) occupying the chair. i The report of the executive, covering the ; past year's working, showed that the league j was in a most satisfactory state financially i and otherwise, it pointed out that at the ; recent City Council elections all the nomi- : nees of the federation had been returned. '■ The society had held 22 ordinary and spcI cial meetings during the year, and the rei ceipis amounted to £55 14s 4d, and the ! expenditure £32 13s 2d. leaving a credit ! balance of £23 Is 2d. The report concluded [ by recommending that a small committee I be appointed to watch closely the affairs of j the City Council. The report and balance- ; sheet were adopted. The following commit- ' lee was set up to consider the proposed alterations to the city by-laws: —Messrs. T. Diiieen, T. Tyson, 11. McVeagh, E. I.eydon, '■ P. J. Nerheny, Hugh McLcoci, A. Bee- ■ ban, it was resolved to send a copy of the league's rules to the oflicials of the various ' libera! and trades organisations throughout , the Auckland province, with letters re- ' sling those bodies to amalgamate with ! the league. The mover pointed out that j the membership of the federation was not i what ii should' be, and that the members : sbottiti do their inmost to induce the various , organisations to affiliate with them.
