DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM.
A sailor named Henry White, belonging to 11.M.5. Pylades, a patient in the District Hospital, died while under chloroform, previous to an operation being performed upon him, soon after three p.m. yesterday. The following are the particulars so far as are known : — White had ruptured himself rather severely about a fortnight ago, and he was admitted into the hospital to be operated upon. We understand that Dr. Woodward (who is relieving Dr. Adams, the anesthetist) was administering the anesthetic .n this case. After struggling violently for a little while White dropped back dead. Previous to the administration of chloroform the deceased had been carefully examined by Dr. Inglis, but no sign of heart affection was discovered. There were present when the fatality occurred : Dr. Williams (who was going to operate), Dr. Pabst, and Dr. Inglis." and Dr. Afford, of H.Ms. Pylades, came in while artificial respiration was being employed, but although everything was done to restore animation, the patient never breathed again. An inquest will be he'd to-day at ten o'clock in the morning, at the District Hospital, by Mr. Urtshani, coroner. Dr. de dive Lowe will make the post-mortem.
