ENTERTAINMENTS AND MEETINGS.

DIX'S GAIETY COMPANY. There will be a complete change of programme to-night by Dix's Gaiety. Company at the City Hall. The clever little comedienne, Miss Daisy Harcourt, who, will make her last appearance this evening, will be heard in her Bongs. Miss Annie Elinnaird will sing "Dear Heart," and Mr. Wm. Neilson "Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes." New songs and specialties will be rendered by the other members of the company, including an American buck dance by the Mintons and a new farce under the direction of Mr. Jim Marion. Ferry's, the Human Frog, wonderful performance, is as strong an attraction as ever. The famous American comedians,' Pope and Sayles, will appear on Monday next, as will Miss Delia Ross, and on Tuesday the Williams quartette, will appear for a farewell season of eleven nights. ST. BENEDICT'S SOCIAL CLUB. The opening dance of the season in connection with the -winter socials held under the auspices: of the St. Benedict's Social Club took place last evening in St. Benedict's Hall. Messrs. J. McDermott, J. Stead, and D. Kelly acted as M.C.'s, and were most assiduous in their duties. Fully 100 couples were present, and Meredith's string band supplied the music, dancing being indulged in till a late hour. The extensive additions to the anterooms by the olub an increased accommodation wore much apreciated. COMMERCIAL EXCHANGE COMPANY. A meeting of the New Zealand Commercial Exchange Company, Limited, was held in the head offices, 32 Grey-street, yesterday. The following gentlemen, who constitute the Board of Directors, were present: Messrs. G. Wilkinson, Mangonui ; T. W. P. Smith, Ivaitaia; G. Buckeridge, Kawliia; J. Colquhoun, Wairoa South; J. R. Parkinson, Auckland; S. A. Browne, Clevedon; J. Boyle. Auckland ; G. E. Thorley, Auckland. Mr. L. Johns the managing director,, was in tho chair. The following resolutions were passed unanimously: --That the company commenco operations at once and invite applications for advances; that committees be formed in all centres to make advances and carry on the work; that no advances be given exceeding two-thirds of the security offered ; that only cheques be used till further notice, the price of cheque books to be one shilling for fifty; that two and a-half per cent, be charged for use of loans as per rules, all cheques to be crossed for safety, and payable to shareholders of the company that a special committee be formed to deal with tho question of exporting and importing, etc.; that an exchange mart be opened for the salo of , articles, such as furniture, vehicles, musical and other instruments, etc., and anything which shareholders may wish. to sell for exchange currency." The following gentlemen were appointed an executive, to deal with business between Board meetings : Messrs. J. 11. Parkinson, J. Boyle, and L. Johnstone. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. M. Flurscheim for the great assistance rendered by that gentleman to the currency reform movement. WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION OF NEW ZEALAND. The usual meeting of the above was held on Wednesday, the 24-th inst., Mrs. Thome (president) in the chair. There was a very good attendance. In consequence of the | unavoidable absence of the secretary, it was found that a mistake had been made in the minutes of last meeting, the appointment of organisers having been made by the Temperance Alliance, and not by ' the convention. This was duly corrected and the minutes then confirmed. The treasurer reported that a wreath had been procured, and two of the members had attended the funeral of the late Mrs. Garland. All present approved of the action, and it was resolved that a sincere vote of sympathy be sent Mr. Garland and family. Many of those present spoke in warm terms of the excellent work none by the late member as secretary, and in many other ways her devotion to the cause of temperance will make her loss much felt. The matter of gross cruelty to horses was brought up and warmly discussed, all present condemning it most strongly, and it was unanimously resolved to write to the town clerk, inspector of police, the Tramway Company, and all 'bus proprietors, also the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, enclosing a subscription to their funds, and sympathising with them in' their difficult task of .dealing with the cases. It was also resolved to write to both the newspapers on the subject, and not to let the matter rest until some change for the better took place. It was announced that Mrs. Sherriff Baiu would in Auckland shortly, and would deliver a lecture, possibly on " The Regeneration of Mankind," and it was resolved that Mrs. Bain bo written to, asking when she was likely to be in town. Misses Campbell and Ncveson, from Dunedin, were introduced by the secretary, and welcomed by the president, Miss Neveson giving a short and interesting account of the work going on in Dunedin. It was resolved to invite the members of Onehunga, Ponsonby, and Pevonporfc Unions and all interested friends to a meeting on May 8, when Mrs. Thorne (one of the delegates to the convention) would give an account of the work done there. ST. JOHN'S GYMNASIUM. The annual business meeting of St. John'? Gymnasium was held on Thursday evening in St. John's schoolroom', Ponsonby. Mr. R. L. Stewart (a life member of the olub) occupied the chair. The annual reports were presented by the secretary and treasurer (Mr. S. H. Scott), and proved satisfactory, tho statement of accounts showing a credit balance. The following officers were duly elected for the ensuing session: Patron, Mr. C. E. Button; vice-patron, Mr. J. Heron: hon. president, Mr. W. Thorne; president, the Rev. W. Ready; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. J. Booth, W. Bartley, W. 12. Hutchison, A- G. Baddiley, J. Stewart, R. Hobbs, A. Thorne, W. A. Thompson, W. Dumper, Burnard, and Mortimer; secretary and treasurer, Mr. S. H. Scott; instructor, Mr. Newton; committee, Messrs. G. Parvin, Y. Rowe, E. Blincoe, A. Neale, R. Morris, R. No ton ; honorary members, Messrs. F. Ewen, G. Anderson, 0. Green, J. Bigelow, and A. Bartlett. ONEHUNGA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Last night a cantata, entitled "The Rolling Seasons," was rendered in the Pre-sby- ; terian Church at Onehunga by the choir, assisted by an efficient orchestra. The cantata was preceded by a short miscellaneous concert, consisting of selection by the orchestra and two solos by Mr. Higgott (of Auckland), namely, _ "The Mighty Deep" and " Ora Pro Nobis." Tho cantata reoeived a capital interpretation. Mrs. Wylie acted as pianist, Mr. Hardie as organist, and Miss Robertson as leader of the orchestra. Much credit is due to Mr. Harry Prime, the conductor, for the excellent entertainment provided. ST. PATRICK'S CLUB. A very successful entertainment was given in St. Patrick's Hall last night by the Boys' Club, there being a large attendance, including Fathers Patterson, Buckley, Moore, Russel, and Ezania, and a number of parents. The programme was a most enjoyable one, including: songs and phonograph selections. Refreshments were handed round during the evening. ANCIENT ORDER OF FORESTERS. The one hundred and thirteenth quarterly meeting of the Auckland district ' of the Ancient Order of Foresters was hold in the Foresters' Hall, Karangahape Road, last evening, Bro. James Robinson, D.C.R., prosiding. ■ The delegates present were as fol lows:—Bros. Carlaw, Garratt, Smith, Anscombie, Stichbury, representing Court City of Auckland ;*Schofield and Carter, Pride of Parnell, Thames; Harris and Morey, Zealandia; Shaldrick and Russell, Pride of Onehunga; Milne and Kennerley, Pride of the North, Thames; Kay, Robin Hood, Panmure; Chisman, Northern Wairoa; Mattocks, Pride of Newmarket; Gibbs, Lee, and Weir, Nil Desperandum ; Hosking, Star of Helonsville; Strude and Napier, M.H.R., Victoria, Devonport; Curtis, Queen of the North, Mangawhare; Sisters Hewlett, Chisman ; Draffin, Pride of Waitekauri; and Davenport, Aroha, To Aroha. Apologies were received for non-attendance of delegates from Taui'anga, Otahuhu, Waihi, and Gisborne. P.D.C.R.'s F. Green and E. Auger occupied seats on the dais. The balancesheet and auditors' report were adopted, the former showing the society to be in a flourishing condition, the funeral fund now standing at £7623 lis 2>rd, whilst the total of investments stood at £7967 14s 6d. Bro. E. Chisman was re-elected as auditor. Tho executive report stated that the society was making steady progress, Court City of Auckland having a membership of 406. Court Aroha had requested that a brother might bo appointed to visit them for the purpose of giving instruction. No official communication having been received from the Royal Reception Committee with reference to the approaching visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, it was decided that tho society could not make arrangements at this meeting to participate in tho proceedings . on that occasion. ' The Paeroa Chrysanthemum Show was concluded last night, and all who gave it their patronage were delighted, with the wonderful advance over last year's exhibition. The public vote on the table decorations resulted in Miss Ettie McAndrew gaining first prize, and her sister, Mrs. D. Craig, second.
