DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Mr J C. Macky (the Mayor), Messrs. M. Niccol, O. Mays, J. Dunning, W. Handley, J. Logan, and J. Walker. w Sf Sp ?? d " < ; 0: ,T he public health officer wrote, asking the Council.to use every endeavour to secure the thorough sanitation A borough. ; The letter was received, and Mr. W. Denby appointed sanitary inspector. The Secretary for Agriculture wrote, with reference to the establishment of public abattoirs within the borough, in accordance with the new Slaughterhouse Act. . Consideration of the matter was deferred till the next meeting. The' Colonial Secretary wired that it was probable that the number of councillors required under the new Act would be' nine. , The letter was received. : The Valuer-General wrote with reference to the cost -of preparing the borough valuation roll,, and forwarding an account, amended from £111 to £23 19s 6d. The Mayor said that he had written to the Valuer-General pretty strongly on the matter, and tins was the result. The town clerk/Auckland, wrote informing the Council that Friday next, at three p.m., was the time appointed for the conference of delegates, at the Council offices, re the ferry service. The Mayor said that it was understood that they were only to concur on the understanding that only certain boats bo licensed for the service, and that the fares be reduced. - '
Glen Road: Messrs. Pegler and Laybourn drew attention to the necessity of repairing the footpath in Glen Road. Mr. Handley urged that the work of metalling the road be carried out at once. The Mayor said that there was considerable difficulty in obtaining labour for the works, also carriage, as the gangs of men at present employed were engaged on special work.. Referred to the Streets Committee. Carlton Terrace: Mr. Murdoch asked that the lighting and formation of Carlton Terrace be attended to. Referred to Works and Tariff Committee to report. Finance: Accounts were passed for payment, amounting to £1480 7s 4d. The town clerk reported that the bank balances stood as follows:—General account, dr., £1634 13s sd; drainage, cr., £236 17s; waterworks, cr., £653 15s 3d; interest No. 1, cr., £817 18s lOd; interest No. 2, cr., £472 Is Id; deposits, cr., £93; Raugitoto Board, cr., 8s 4d. Spraggon's Corner: The engineer submitted plans for the cutting down and building of a retaining wall at Spraggon's Corner. Consideration was deferred. Streets Committee: Tho report of the Streets and Works Committee was adopted. The report recommended that the drainage shed on Admiralty reserve be removed ano\ the stand for water test for pipes bo utilised for the firebell tower for Calliope Road. Clarence-street: That the footpath be widened to 10ft, kerbed with stones, and to have a 4iin pitch from Victoria. Road to Wynyard-street. Arm-street North: That a crossing be made from the southern corner of Fleet-street across' to the footpath in Ann-street North. Firebell: That the proposed firebell be placed at the junction of Clarence-street with Calliope Road, and that Mr. Walker draw up plans and specifications for the tower. Lovers' Walk: That the road and footpath as far as Mrs. Russell's entrance be reformed. Footpath Rata Road: That the footpath in Rata Road across to Mrs. Rattray's be made as requested. Korr-street: That the water-table be carried along to St. Aubyn-street and path made on south side opposite the school. Thanks: On Mr. Dunning's motion it was resolved to thank Mr. Malcolm Niccol for his handsome donation of bound copies of the Now Zealand Statutes to the Council. Building Permit: A building permit was granted to Mr. J. M. Logan for his property at Stanley Point Road. Stone-breaker: The foreman of works recommended the purchase of a stone-breaker in order to carry out certain work at Mount Cambria. Referred to the "streets and Works Committee. _ . . ' Postal Service: Mr. Dunning moved, "That the postal authorities bo requested to extend the service to . Victoria Park Road." Carried. : ■
