RAILWAY EXTENSION NORTHWARDS.

THE hopeful promise! made by the Minister of Railways to the chairman of our Kaipara Extension Committee, Mr. '£. C. Sainsbury. who on Friday last waited upon the Minister and Northern members on their torn of inspection at the present works, is rnos* encouraging, viz., the sum voted by Government during the recent session will be fully expended during the present year. More labour is to be employed at once, so as to push on tho line, which will probably reach the Komokoriki Road within a year from date, which will bring the line within four or five miles from this settlement. v his will make the line available for passenger traffic to a certain extent, but owing to tho natural formation of the intervening hills it will not be of really practical use until the tunnel in tho Ahuroa is passed, and this will in all probability bo accomplished the following season. Mr. Hall-Jones also fulls acknowledged the urgency of the extension, ana promises more speedy progress. Owing to our benighted isolation in the matter .>» telephonic or telegraphic communication, insufficient notice was given, or a largo deputation would have received the Minister and members of the Govern men* at tho present terminus.—[Kaipara Flats Correspondent.]

Of the Victorian Parliamentary candidates, Mr. Trenwith, the Labour' Leader, spent the least, his election for Richmond costing him only £7 Bs. He felt so" sure of election that he did not make use of any secretaries, committee, or scrutineers. The district orders will be found in our advertising columns relative to the quarterly examination of officers at the Drill Hall on Wednesday next, commencing at ten o'clock a.m. The following are the local Board of Examiners: —LieutenantColonel W. B. White (president), and Majoi Pirie and Captain McKenzie (members). It will be seen by our obituary column that Hone Rawhena (Johnny Coffin) died at his residence, Mangere, at the ripe age of 75 years. Hon: was the native constable, who, with a European constable, arrested a native chief in 1851, which led to what is known as The Invasion ot the Ngatipaoa." He was a loyal native, and after his retirement from the Auckland police force went to reside at Mangere. The funeral will leave his late residence for Mangere cemetery this afternoon at three o'clock, and no doubt some of the old settlers who knew Hone will pay the last tribute to his memory,.
