THE DUNEDIN TRAGEDY.

VERDICT OF GUILTY.

THE ACCUSED SENTENCED TO

DEATH.

[BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.]

Dtjnkdin, Friday.

The trial ot Sarah Fogo, for the murder of her husband, Thos. Fogo, was concluded to-day. Mr. Sim, for the defence, addressed the jury at length and with force. The theory set up to account for the deed was that Fogo had been drinking during the night, as shown by the gin bottle in the bedroom. Mrs. Fogo had got up to do washing. Her husband asked for another drink, which she refused. He then jumped out of bed in a violent rage, seized a knite in the room and threatened to cut her throat. To frighten her he went to s'nib the door, when Mrs. Fogo seized a stick and struck him a blow on the back of his head. Dazed for a moment he turned rounu with the knife in his right hand and made a step. She wrested the knife witli her left hand, and struck a. blow without realising what she was doing. The moment she does so she steps back, and was found with the knife in her hand by her son and daughter. The jury, after retirement of seven hours, returned with a verdict of guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy. The Judge, in passing the sentence prescribed by law, thought he might say he concurred in the recommendation of the jury, and would forward it to the proper quarter. It was not for him to give effect to it. The Judge then put on the black cap and passed the death sentence in the usual form, the prisoner bursting into tears.
