CHIMING BELLS.

[BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wanganui, Thursday. Some months ago Miss Burnett, a wellknown resident, offered to present a peal of chiming bells to the town as a memorial of the part played by Wanganui in the South African campaign. The conditions attached to the gift were that the townspeople should provide a tower for the bells, and that Miss Burnett should have a voice in the selection of the site. A great deal of trouble has occurred in regard to this latter matter, the Borough Council refusing two sites selected bv Miss Burnett, and she herself declining to agree to any one 01 the different sites offered by the Council. As a result of the deadlock Miss Burnett has now withdrawn her offer.
