DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held last night. There were present: Messrs. Malcolm Niecol (in the chair), O. Maya, R. Duder, J. Dunning, W. Handley, R. Logan, jun., J. A. Walker, and E. W. Alison.

Sunday Work: Miss Hot wrote stating that she noticed by the papers that a conference was to be held between the Council and the Devonport Ferry Company, and she asked if a word could not then be said on behalf of the employees on the ferry steamers. Would not, she asked, one boat be sufficient to meet the traffic demands of both city and borough on the Sabbath, and could not excursions lie discontinued on that day? Mr. Dunning mentioned that the Council had given the proprietors of the electric trams permission to run on Sundays, and it could not, in the face of that, approach the Ferry Company in the manner suggested. It was decided to reply that much as the Council might sympathise with the sentiments of the letter, it was not a matter in which it could interfere.

Savings Bank: Mr. Wm. Philcox was granted a permit to erect the new Savings Bank premises in Victoria Road, opposite the Council Chambers. The plans were placed on the table. The building is to be constructed of brick and plastered, and when finished will form a handsome addition to the architecture of the borough. Cab Stand: Mr. Savage, the foreman of works, submitted a report as to re-forming the cab stand. Mr. Mays said there were many complaints about the offensive odours rising from the present stand in warm weather. The Council resolved to have the work carried out.

Tarring and Sanding Footpaths: Specifications for tarring and sanding the borough footpaths were supplied by the foreman of works, and it was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee, with power to call tenders for the work, returnable at the next Council meeting. Victoria Road: . Upon the recommendation of the Streets and Works Committee, the Council resolved that Victoria Road, from Clarence-street to the wharf, be formed to the full width, metalled and rolled, the same as Beach Road.

Taking Sand from Cheltenham Beach: The Streets Committee recommended that permission may be granted to carters, on application, for removal of shell or sand from Cheltenham Beach, between Mr. Cardno's property and Muritai Road, and below 66ft from the fence line, and that a royalty of sixpence a load be charged. Mr. Duder said there was no sand 66ft from the fence line. The clause was referred back to the committee for further consideration.

Domain and Grey Streets: Mr. Mays moved, " That tenders, returnable at next meeting, bo called for works authorised- in Domain and Grey Streets, and that plans and specifications be prepared by the foreman of works. He explained thai he had chosen these two streets because they had had the most promises and the least performances. The foreman of works stated that Groy-street was a peculiar street, and he felt sure that he could make a better job of it for the money than if it were lot on tender. The Council resolved to call tenders for the work in Do-main-street, and to do that in Grey-street by the Council's workmen as soon as practicable. The amounts authorised wore £60 for Domain-street and £30 for Grey-street. Charitable Aid Board Representative: , Mr. Niccol was appointed to represent the borough at the election of a representative to tho Charitable Aid Board, and he was instructed to support the candidature of the present member, Mr. A. Bruce. Nuisances: At the suggestion of Mr. Walker, the Council agreed to instruct the drainage inspector, who has special facilities for viewing tho borough, to report any nuisances he may discover on his rounds.
