The unusual procedure of a person asking the police to lock him up occurred at Stratford recently, when a man suffering from the effects of drink asked a constable to take charge of him. as he felt inclined to break things. Unlike ttic man who acted in such a manner in Dunedin recently, he had no difficulty in having his request complied with, and the Stratford gaol was placed at his disposal. At an interview with the magistrate, he was convicted and discharged. Sir George Dibbs presided over a meeting at the Hotel Australia, Sydney, on November 15, to consider the best way of assisting the daughters of the late Mrs. Marmaduke Constable. The late Mrs. Constable was an actress famous 30 or 40 years ago as Miss Joey Gougenheim, and was great in a round of parts which included such characters as Peg Woffington—still remembered as one of her best impersonations. After discussion, it was decided to call for public subscriptions. Amongst those present were Messrs. J. T. Toohey, H. Plimmer, James Thynne, John Bennett, Frederick J. Smith, Mrs. Hotham, and Miss Fitzsimons. Before the meeting separated the sum of £32 was subscribed in the room. The manager of the G'ostley Home desires to acknowledge with thanks reccipt of ueoud parcels of second-hand clothing, shoes, and slippers from Mesdames Harrison and Westwood for the use of the inmates. A sale of work will be hold in the Wesleyan schoolroom, Grafton Road, to-morrow and Thursday. The sale opens at three in the afternoon, _ and in the evening of each day. There will be a concert each evening for an hour, by the Rev. A. Mitchell, Mrs. G. Read, Mrs. Somervillc (of Australia), Mrs. Dr. Parkos, .and others. A bazaar and Christmas tree will be opened to-day in connection with the Primitive Methodist Church, Eden Terrace, by His Worship the Mayor of Auckland, and tomorrow by Mr. Richard Herbert, in the schoolroom. The bazaar will bo open afternoon and evening. The children will receive a gift from the tree, and the proceeds will be towards the building fund. BICYCLES SENT FOR and returned quickly.
