TO-DAY'S AMATEUR ATHLETIC CARNIVAL.

The 42nd carnival of the Auckland Amateur Athletic- and Cycle Club will be held on the Domain Cricket Ground this afternoon, when a most attractive sports programme will be submitted, the' first event of the day being timed to start at half-past one p.m. For years past athletic writers and lovers of amateur sport, both in Australia and New Zealand, have been discussing the merits and demerits of M. M. Roseingrave (Irish hurdle crack) and G. W. Smith (Australasian and New Zealand hurdle champion), and ever since the arrival of - the first-named ■ in the colonies the hope has been expressed that the two would be brought together over the fences. Recognising the interest that centred in such a meeting, the Auckland Club sent an invitation across to Roseingrave (then in Australia) to visit this centre and meet Smith, but owing to. an injured leg the Irishman was unable to accept. The club, however, did not give up all hopes of bringing about the meeting, and as a result of their continued efforts the two will try conclusions in a 120 yds invitation hurdle race at to-day's sports, the event being fixed for three p.m., to meet the convenience of patrons. Speculation is rife as to the result, and the general opinion is that it will be a magnificently fought-out contest, while it is said to be quite on the cards that the existing Australasian record will be broken. The cyoling events will also be full of interest, as \V. Reynolds (league champion) and A. A. Brook (alliance champion) will be brought together for the first time, and as this pair must be set down as the fastest amateur riders in Auckland, the struggle for the honours should prove close and exciting. Splendid fields will also contest the several other races on the programme, and as a whole the sports should be the most interesting held under the auspices of the club for years past. The arrangements for the comfort and convenience of patrons are most complete, and, as usual, afternoon tea will be provided in a large marquee for the.ladies, while a pleasing musical programme will be submitted by Impey'a brass band. . ■ " ' :".
