CLAIM FOR DAMAGES.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OyTH CORRESPONDENT.] Paeroa, Friday. At the Magistrate's Court to-day the case of Philip Jonas v. James Barrett was heard. The claim was for £46, damages for an assualt committed at a- pigeon match, held recently at Mackaytown. A considerable amount of evidence was brought by plaintiff 'to show that the assault was unprovoked, and resulted in his receiving a broken nose. On the other hand, defendant and his witnesses alleged that the blow was given in self-defence, and that the defendant would have been struck if he had not struck first. The case occupied the attention of the Court all day. Mr. Clendon appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. Miller for defendant. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £10, and medical fees, amounting altogether to £11 12s 6d, with costs £6. The Court held that plaintiff had, to a great extent, brought the punishment on himself by following the defendant when he was trying to avoid him.
