VOLUNTEERING NEWS.

The Auckland Naval Artillery Volunteers went into camp of instruction for 16 day at the old tramway stables, Devonporfc, lasft evening. There was a capital muster at the Drill Hall at half-past seven p.m. (under lieutenant-Commander Clemens and Lieutenant Endean), where the company formed up and was marched to the Devonport ™rrj Company's tee, embarking for the North Shore at eight o'clock. The company will go through WSJ?.*? at the Bastion today and during their stay under canvas will go through their competitive shot and shell prac ice at the forts,'the firing being fixed for the morning, of Saturday, Wembofl, and Saturday, December 8. ' The second detachment of the Ponsonby Naval Artn.ery volunteers will go through their competitive big-gun firing at Fc? r Cautley early this morning. This detachment have done excellent work in practice, and with favourable conditions are expected to score a . sufficient number of points to qualify the company as a first-class battery, which will entitle them to the Government badges. The Devonport Submarine Mining Volunteers paraded for the monthly Government inspection at the Drill Hall last evening, when there was a large muster, under Lieutenants Davis, Robinson, and Reid. Lieu-tenant-Colonel Banks, officer-commanding the district, inspected the company, aftor which they marched out.

VOLUNTEERING AT HASTINGS. Owing to the success of the recent riflesnooting competition at Waipawa for the Coleman shield, a sreat filip has been given to volunteering of late, and a strong move--ment is on*foot for the purpose of forming a Hawlce s Bay Rifle Association. The newly-formed Olive Rifles were drilled for the first time last week by Ehill-Ser-geant-Majoi Finn. The men were very attentive to their work, and the corps give every promise of soon being efficient.—[Own Correspondent.] DARGAVILLE VOLUNTEERS. At a meeting held for the purpose, it was decided to apply to the Government to accept the Dargaville Rifle Club. Over 40 men signed the requisition, and the following were elected officers: President, Mr. P. J. Dargaville; vice-presidents, Dr. F. M. Furchas, Messrs. X. A. McLcod and C. H. Gould; Executive Committee, the president, Messrs. J. Walters (secretary), M. Hyland, and W. Moore. Efforts are being made in the distriot to get a mounted infantry corps. Communication with the other side of the river, in the shape of e bridge c. a fern', would enable a first-rate corps to bo raised.-* [Own Correspondent.]
