The New Zealand Contingent to attend the Commonwealth will be 58 in number. This includes a mounted Maori corps, nine in number, from Wairarapa. Volunteers have presented themselves in considerable numbers since it has been announced that the New South Wales Government will provide the horses. There will, therefore, be no difficulty in the selection of 11 men from, Wellington out of the 21 who have since made application to the Defence Department. Ministers have decided that Colonel Penton shall have command of the contingent. Major Hawkins, of Invercargill, Us the senior major amongst the officers nominated, will be next in command. "Captain Loveday (Wellington), Holgate (Auckland), Dunk (Palmerston North), Hayhurst (Temuka, formerly with the New Zealand forces in South Africa), and Acting-Cap-tains Kiernan (Nelson) and Montgomery (Auckland), have been recommended for the captaincy. Captain Loveday is the senior officer, and it is~almost certain that ho will be selected. There are to be three lieutenants, one of whom will be Lieutenant Riemene, of the Waxrorapa, representing the Maoris.
