The scarlet, fever regulations have been enforced throughout Queensland for another year. ■ To show the high percentage of. lambs this year in the Maniototo, the Mount Ida Chronicle mentions that a gentleman states that out of a small flock of something under 100 ewes, the number of lambs was only three short of the number of ewes. Returns like this are exceptional in the Maniototo. There has been a sudden, as well as a marked rise in the price of potatoes locally (says the Timaru Post). A bag of potatoes which could have been bought a fortnight ago for 4s 6d is now worth 7s. And they are very scarce at that. A buyer in town from the North states that he was unable to anything like fill his requirements. A plucky rescue at sea was effected on October 5 during the voyage of the ship Constanz, from Capetown to Melbourne. A seaman fell overboard, and, notwithstanding the vessel was travelling about eight knots an hour, the sailmaker and an A.B. threw a small Norwegian pram, overboard and jumped into it, proceeding at once to the relief of their comrade. In less than an hour he was safelv on board again. Two boys named Head, aged 16 and 14 years, respectively, who lived at Railway Town (New South Wales), had a disagreement with their parents, and decided to seek adventures, with, however, .disastrous results. Possessed of two revolvers and an old pea rifle, and after meeting another youth, they decided on some daring schemes in the back countrv. Before they could carry out their design, however, the younger Head's revolver exploded, and the bullet entered his brother's head, lodging behind the cartilage of the ear, and necessitating his removal to a hospital.. - , - '••
